Ben Vulcan ~ Part 3

Updated: Aug 23, 2021

Allow me to introduce you to the new Ben Vulcan. A man betrayed by his work, by his affection, and by his loyalty. No longer interested in other people, his life became an endless cycle. He worked hard to craft his magnum opus, a weapon capable of fighting on its own. Greatly interested in his work, the Tysill family greatly funded his research. He knew the Soul Gem was the centerpiece of his work, so he experimented on them constantly. Unfortunately, Soul Gem’s are naturally unstable crystals of magic energy. In his experiments, he lost both of his legs and his right arm.

Not that any of that could stop him. Despite the heat of his magic, Ben had grown to be a cold man. Rival crafting companies would find their warehouses and factories burned down, their leaders and business owners murdered by their rivals. With Tysill’s backing and his own cruelty, almost all craftsmen in the town worked for him. The profits they generated fueled his obsession with Soul Gems. Ben Vulcan no longer trusted humans, no longer felt comfortable among them. So he desired to make his own friends, his own lovers.

By complete accident, he found the secret to completing his dream. Soul Gems were able to record spells and release them accordingly. The larger the Gem the more spells that could be imprinted. With this new headway, he needed to increase his work pace. He constructed himself new legs, a new arm. They required magic to move but he hardly used his anyway. Although his new limbs were meant to be replacement parts, he treated them as upgrades. Adding bizarre gadgets and constructing them in unnatural ways.

Instead of the two legs he ran away from his home with, he had 8 spider-like legs that allowed him advanced mobility and improved balance while crafting. His right arm had no fingers but was more like a pocket tool with many different functions. Whether those functions were obvious or not, only Ben Vulcan truly understood any of them. After months of hard work, he had finally completed the core of his research. He held up the orange glowing heart-shaped stone. It seemed as if streams of words traveled along its insides.

The first Construct Core in the world. By inscribing the spells on the Soul Gem with a special silver tool he had invented. He could focus on only feeding the core magic energy. At the same time, he requested more Soul Gems for his research from the Tysill. This time they requested something far worse than tools or money. He was to marry the youngest daughter of their family. Much to his discontent, he was forced into this contract, he was to provide 3 heirs or the Tysill family would withdraw their support.

Through gritted teeth, he accepted their deal and married Morgana Tysill. She was just as cruel as he was and had just as much love for him. While their first child was growing inside her, Ben finally completed his work. A metal construct, born from his fire and tempered under his hammer. Every inch of its body was crafted by him for him. So why did it look exactly like the woman he incinerated? Enraged, he obliterated the construct, only to remake an exact replica. Again and again, he tried to make her different but her face never changed.

He never put the Construct’s Heart in his machine. Ben Jr, his eldest son became Ben Sr’s apprentice at a young age. The only love he received from his father was when he succeeded in crafting something to perfection. He never did receive his father’s love. After the birth of his 3rd son, Ben had completed his end of the bargain. In the dead of night he disappeared, the quiet clicking of his metallic spider-like legs trailed off into the darkness. The only things he took with him were his trusty hammer and the Construct’s Heart, never to be seen again.
